As a way to incentivise households to make the step towards sustainable energy for their domestic heating and water, the government have introduced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Through the scheme, eligible people could get a grant to cover part of the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating systems (oil, gas, electric or LPG) with a heat pump or biomass boiler.
For people in England and Wales, firstly check if you’re eligible, and if you are, you can then apply for the grant. For people in Scotland, you might be able to get an interest-free loan or a grant to make your home more energy efficient.
For those that are eligible, one grant per property is available, there currently are:
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump (including water source heat pumps and those on shared ground loops)
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
The installed system must meet certain standards, such as minimum efficiency levels (Chris Jones Plumbing & Heating can advise on this these).
You’re eligible for a grant if both of the following are true. You must:
- own the property you’re applying for (including if it’s a business, a second home, or a property you rent out to tenants)
- be replacing fossil fuel heating systems – such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)
You’re still eligible if you’ve already had funding to make your property more energy efficient, for example by insulating it.
